Many-shot prompting (as a persona-elicitation method) — supplies the second elicitation axis for → Projection-based monitoring of prompt-induced persona shifts
Where system-prompting elicits trait shifts categorically -- eight discrete prompts, from trait-suppressing to trait-promoting -- many-shot prompting elicits them by dose: 0, 5, 10, 15, or 20 exemplars of the target trait are prepended to each evaluation question (persona-vectors, §"3.3 Monitoring prompt-induced persona shifts via projection", p. 5). This graded structure changes what the correlation with monitoring's projection actually measures. Table 2 shows many-shot's within-condition correlation -- computed separately within each shot-count bucket -- stays close to its overall correlation for evil (0.735 vs. 0.755) and sycophancy (0.813 vs. 0.817), unlike system-prompting's much larger overall/within-condition gaps for the same two traits (persona-vectors, §"C.2 Correlation analysis", p. 31). Because a fixed shot-count still contains meaningful item-to-item variation in how strongly individual exemplars push the trait, many-shot's within-condition signal has somewhere real to come from, whereas a fixed system prompt is closer to a constant. Hallucination is the exception: many-shot's overall correlation there (0.634) is the lowest of any trait/method pairing in the table -- evidence that exemplar-based elicitation of fabrication is inherently noisier than instructing for it directly, unlike evil and sycophancy, where many-shot slightly outperforms system-prompting on both measures. Many-shot prompting is thus not a redundant check on system-prompting's result but a structurally different stress test, probing graded sensitivity rather than categorical separability.
